Serena Williams ‘paved the way’ for mothers to keep playing tennis, says Martina Navratilova
Serena Williams will not be remembered for winning more Grand Slam singles titles, and she’s certainly not remembered for her role in giving birth to twin daughters. But the 34-year-old has done more than any other athlete to shape the landscape of women’s sports, and has done it with a combination of grace and wit that’s difficult to top.

As a teenager, Navratilova began competing in tennis when she was 15 years old, and joined the United States Women’s National Team in 1997 at the age of 17. She had made her Grand Slam finals and had enjoyed strong results at the French and Australian Open competitions.
Navratilova won the Olympic gold medal in singles at the 2008 Beijing Games.
At the U.S. Open in 2009, she upset Serena in the third round.
