At least 3 people killed and 11 others injured in Brazil school shootings
In the latest school massacre, two people were killed and 11 others wounded in a shooting at a suburban Rio de Janeiro school, the head of Rio and state police said on Sunday.
The head of Rio state police, Claudio Mondlane, told a news conference that the gunmen opened fire with assault rifles on the school in the capital city of Brasilia.
“Three people were shot dead and 19 were wounded with nine more hospitalised,” he said.
Mondlane said the first victims were teachers at a high school in Cidade Tiradentes, south of the capital. He said the attackers were dressed in black and wearing masks. The second victims were teachers at a middle school in the same area.
The head of the state police, Mauricio Santoro, said the gunmen were also dressed in black and that they shot the victims at long range.
“There are 11 people injured and 3 killed, four of them shot at long range,” Santoro said on Twitter.
The school, a middle and high school, had around 1,200 students and was celebrating the start of a new school year.
“At this point we can confirm that three people have been killed and 19 wounded,” the police chief said.
Mondane said that police patrols were still going on and that more school officials would be called in to try to reassure the families of students.
“There is still a significant presence in the city so we cannot confirm that there are no more people still around at this moment,” he said.
“But we will try our best to ensure that everything goes back to normal.”
The shooting came after the deadliest rampage in Brazil since 1992 in which 58 people were killed in a shooting at the country’s most important public school, Maréchal de Olavarrige in Maringá.
Mondane said the attack had been “targeted”.
“The criminals must be found, these criminals who are targeting our community,” he said.
Police and military helicopters were on the scene at the university while the national guard was also on the ground in the area.
At least 100 people had been killed in the last three years in similar attacks in the country.
