Qatar’s National Football Team Will Play the World Cup in Qatar

It’s no secret Qatar is an oil-rich, tiny monarchy of about 1,000 people who are eager to host the 2022 World Cup and other international sporting competitions. But now it’s ready to show its fans that it’s a sovereign country with its own national football team with a jersey made by Adidas. The jersey is a nod to the country’s proud history as a pioneering oil producer; the logo features the word “Qatar” surrounded by a heart with the two stars representing the country’s emirate status. The national team is nicknamed “The Guardians” and will be known as the Qataris, the same name as Qatar’s national airline, Qatar Airways. The jersey is designed with four stars representing the four countries that constitute Qatar’s territory — the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the U.A.E. — and Qatar’s national flag (a black, white, yellow and red). The jersey’s sleeves are embroidered with the names of the four nations. The Qatar national football team will play its first official match in the World Cup on July 23 against Saudi Arabia. They’ll kick off their campaign with their first of their three games against Iran on Aug. 20 in Doha. If Qatar proves itself a worthy host, it will do so by having strong team performances in the first round or by not losing. Qatar is currently ranked at No. 30 in the world after four years at the top of the table, but a number of top teams have beaten the Qatari national team in recent years. The two most recent games were a 2-0 win over UAE in 2013 in Doha and a 7-2 win over Saudi
