Emma Raducanu’s former coach Dmitry Tursunov says he left because of ‘red flags’

Emma Raducanu: the daughter of a Soviet pilot and former world chess champion, who was awarded the Lomonosov gold in 1984 and later became a leading Russian figure in the space industry.

But the 44-year-old mother of two says she is no longer able to enjoy her role as the leader of the cosmonauts.

She has reportedly been diagnosed with severe depression, and wants desperately to rejoin her former team of astronauts.

The retired Russian space engineer says she was forced to quit her career because she wanted to ‘avoid more stress and a lack of money’.

She said: ‘I was ready to leave, but they said, “Look, the company needs you, and you need to do more than you are doing now.”‘

She also claims to have been denied a raise and told she had to return home to care for her children.

Emma said: ‘In the end, the whole situation left me with no reason to continue working.

She added: ‘They did not offer me the opportunity to go to space, although I have dreamed about it for a long time.

Emma Raducanu is said to be suffering from depression following her forced retirement from space travel. She did not comment on her condition but said she wanted to return home to help her children

‘I have spent five years with my family and my son, and I am not ready to retire.’

The American-born daughter of a Soviet pilot says she left the cosmonaut training programme – she is believed to be the first woman in space – because she wanted to ‘avoid more stress and a lack of money’.

Emma’s former coach Dmitry Tursunov, 53, said she left training because she wanted to ‘find a new home in space’.
