How Afghanistan women’s football teammade it to Australia
Afghan women’s national football team has played three years without their national coach, who left for Iran to complete his PhD. This has given rise to the women’s team in Afghanistan to achieve the first place in their debut in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Japan in April 2017.
I came to study medicine in the year 2006 and one of the things I have always loved is sports. In the university, I started playing volleyball and basketball and slowly, slowly, I started to follow other sports such as football.
Afghan team’s coach arrested for ‘terrorism’
Afghan women’s national team coach, Shahi Bahrami, is currently on a four-day fast to protest against the Taliban, but his suspension appears to have backfired. The team’s website and Facebook page were briefly taken offline earlier this week, but have now been restored.
Football is a game of speed, aggression, strength and elegance. It is a competition in which the opposing side must adapt to the physical and mental requirements of the game. It often takes place in countries and continents divided by civilisations.
When I started playing soccer, I was a little bit shy and didn’t know about rules. But now, I consider myself the goalkeeper who always plays well for the team.
On one hand, female football is very close to the male version of the game played in many countries such as Morocco, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, where the female team is often the only one. On the other hand, it is very different from male football, where the players are almost entirely male.
In Afghanistan, football still has a long way to go. The national team is one of the few teams in the world that has not had any coach since their national team joined the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Japan in May 2017.
